Employer-sponsored visas allow Australian employers to fill labour shortages by sponsoring skilled overseas workers. Many of these visas offer pathways to permanent residency.

Skills in Demand Visa (SID) – Subclass 482

The Skills in Demand subclass 482 visa allows employers to sponsor skilled workers to meet labour shortages in Australia. This visa is ideal for tradespeople, technicians, professionals, and specialised workers in shortage industries.

Key Features:

  • Temporary visa valid for up to 4 years
  • Allows full-time work for the sponsoring employer
  • Provides pathways to permanent residency for eligible workers

Main Requirements:

  • Employer sponsorship
  • Occupation on the approved list
  • Relevant skills and work experience
  • English language proficiency
  • Mandatory skills assessment for certain occupations

Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) – Subclass 186

The Subclass 186 visa is a permanent visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer. It has two streams:

1. Direct Entry Stream

For applicants with skills and qualifications relevant to their nominated occupation.

You must:

  • Be under 45 (unless exempt)
  • Be nominated for an occupation on the relevant Occupation List
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Hold a positive skills assessment
  • Meet English language requirements

2. Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream

This is a pathway of Permanent Residency for subclass 482 visa holders who have been working for their sponsoring employer.

You must:

  • Hold a 482 visa (or eligible bridging visa)
  • Have worked full time in sponsored employment for at least 2 years
  • Be nominated by the current employer

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa – Subclass 494

This visa encourages migrants to work in regional Australia for employers who cannot fill positions locally.

Key Features:

  • Valid for 5 years
  • Requires employer sponsorship
  • Provides a direct pathway to permanent residency (Subclass 191) after 3 years
  • Must work for a regional employer in the nominated role

Requirements:

  • Nomination by an approved regional employer
  • Occupation on the regional skilled occupation list
  • Positive skills assessment
  • At least 3 years relevant work experience
  • Competent English
  • Usually under 45 years of age
