Migration Skills Assessments

The Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) is for applicants who need a skills assessment as part of their skilled migration visa application to the Department of Home Affairs. The MSA outcome recognises if you have the skills and experience needed at the required level to work in Australia in your nominated occupation.

Skills assessments are issued by relevant skills assessing authorities. Skills assessing authority is an organisation that checks that your skills meet the standards they set to work in a relevant occupation.

You might need a skills assessment if you apply for the following visas and streams:

General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas

Applicants for the following points tested GSM visas must have a suitable skills assessment for their nominated occupation:

Skilled Independent visa
(subclass 189)

Skilled Nominated visa
(subclass 190)

Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491)

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

If you apply under the Direct Entry stream, a skills assessment is required.

Skills in Demand (SID) (subclass 482)

Certain primary SID visa applicants must undertake a mandatory skills assessment as part of the visa application process. The following steps apply, when submitting your visa application:

Check that you need a mandatory skills assessment or are eligible for an exemption, Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482)

Begin or have completed a skills assessment, within a three year period, before you submit

Include the skills assessment reference number to avoid processing delays

Provide evidence of any exemption if you are eligible

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)

To apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) — Post-Vocational Education Work stream you must nominate an occupation that is on the Medium to Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and obtain a Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) or Full Skills Assessment.

Work:

Generally up to 48 hours per fortnight during study, unlimited during breaks

Stay:

Valid for the length of your course, with potential extensions if you apply for another visa.

Dependants:

Can include family members in your application.
